Wilcox Engineering was proud to be part of Cemex’s significant fleet modernisation programme in April, contributing our specialist bodywork expertise to 20 new DAF XD 410 8×4 tippers. Working alongside partners Thompsons and CBR, we delivered bespoke body solutions that complemented the advanced capabilities of these state-of-the-art vehicles supplied by Ford & Slater in Leicester.
The new DAF XD fleet represented a major advancement for Cemex, featuring DAF’s innovative ‘FAD’ 8×4 axle configuration and achieving a four-star DVS safety rating straight from the factory. This expansion brought DAF vehicles to over 90% of Cemex’s approximately 100-strong fleet of 8×4 aggregate tippers – a testament to both the quality of the base vehicle and the specialist bodywork solutions we provided.
According to Nigel Ponton, UK fleet engineering manager at Cemex: “The new DAF XD models offer a step change in visibility and overall safety. The truck’s four-star DVS rating aligns with our commitment to protecting vulnerable road users, while the mirrorless camera technology has exceeded our expectations. After initial apprehension, our drivers now prefer the digital mirrors, which provide superior visibility and clarity.”
Our bodywork solutions were engineered to work seamlessly with the trucks’ advanced drivetrain technology. The vehicles featured the 10.8-litre Paccar MX-11 engine delivering 408hp and 2150Nm of maximum torque, offering substantial fuel efficiency improvements over previous CF models. This enhanced performance, combined with our optimised body design, supported both environmental sustainability and operational productivity.
Wilcox Engineering’s involvement in this project reflected our commitment to understanding end-user requirements. As Ponton noted: “For our drivers, the cab is their office. We actively involved them in the procurement process to ensure the vehicles met their needs. The spacious cab design, ergonomic layout, and improved visibility create a more comfortable and productive working environment.”
These vehicles now serve Cemex’s extensive UK operations, supporting their network of 90 readymix concrete plants and 22 quarries. With over 2000 staff and more than eight decades of market presence, Cemex has established itself as a leading supplier of readymix concrete and mortars – and Wilcox Engineering was honoured to support their continued success with our specialist bodywork solutions.
This partnership demonstrated our capability to deliver tailored solutions that enhance vehicle performance, safety, and driver satisfaction across demanding commercial applications.
